Objective
The objective of the lab is to create a sustainable environment for organisms such as plants or bugs.
Hypothesis
Since our terrarium is desert-themed, I think the cacti/succulents will successfully thrive and not die out. We have soil and sand so the terrarium could sustain more plants than just cacti.
Materials
Gravel/Pebbles
Soil
Sand
Water
Charcoal
Succulents
Plants (Tillandsia?)
Purpose
The purpose of this lab is to learn how plants can survive in an ecosystem they've adapted to. Cacti and succulents have adapted to warm weather and dry ground. You can water cacti and it will retain the water (that's how it can survive so long in a desert).
Results
Our cacti are still living. You want to know why? Because the cacti can absorb and hold water. We created a sustainable, desert-themed ecosystem.
Conclusion
I didn't like this project very much. We had limited resources and we couldn't make a huge, beautiful one with props and colors and plants everywhere. We had to use simple things, like gravel, soil, sand, etc. We also had limited space.
Limiting Factors
One limiting factor we encountered was space. We had limited space for our plants and there was a lot of stuff we had to put in it. The space reduces the amount of plants that can grow in one area.
Cycles
Water Cycle: We sprayed water on the succulents, which evaporates. Then we spray it again, and it evaporates, and so on.
Carbon Cycle: The plants let out carbon into the atmosphere, which goes back to the plant, which lets it out again, and so on.
Nitrogen Cycle: The plants absorb nitrogen from the soil. Then the nitrogen is transpirated into the air, precipitates into surface runoff, percolates, and gets absorbed again.
