Perch Dissection
Description
We dissected a fish today, after all the other smelly ones. Out of all of them, this one was the worst, both chemicals and fishy smell. We were supposed to determine if it was a boy or a girl. We didn't even observe its bones, and it's nicknamed "bony fish".
Procedure
My partner and I started by filleting the fish, taking out a rectangle chunk o we could see all the organs. After we finished the dissection and observation of organs, we popped its eyeball and it squirted everywhere. We did get the lens though, it's a little yellow-ish ball.
Materials
Fish
Tray
Probe
Tweezers
Scalpel
Scissors
Pins
Conclusion/Analysis
The only part of this dissection that I enjoyed was the popping of the eyeball. It smelled so bad and it was pretty boring.
Ecology
Perch fish, also known as chordates, have a dorsal, hollow nerve cord, pharyngeal pouches, a tail, and a notochord. Chordates can be found on both land and sea. An example of a land chordate is a polar bear and chordates can eat anything from leaves to mammals.
Comparative Structure & Function
Perch are segmented, sexually reproducting chordates. They have a complete digestive system, closed circulation, gills for respiration, kidneys for excretion, and have a present nervous system. Chordates have an endoskeleton made of cartilage. They have three germ layers and bilateral symmetry.
