Grasshopper Dissection
Description
In this lab, we dissected a grasshopper. We cut off one of each leg and wing until it looked like a stump. We dissected it to learn about the anatomy and different systems of its body.
Procedure
We first observed the grasshopper and located each of its limbs and parts of the body. We took off the legs and wings and cut it open. We determined its gender and then we cut its head off and put it on a stake (a pin).
Materials
Grasshopper
Scalpel
Tweezers
Scissors
Pins
Probe
Conclusion/Analysis
I'm really getting tired of these dissections. They smell really bad, and we do them for like 10 minutes. I feel like we should observe it more and draw it, but we just cut it open, answer stupid questions, do our website updates, and clean up any guts or juice left on or beside the tray.
Ecology
Anthropods, also known as grasshoppers, are egg-laying insects found in warm places. They eat leaves, and nothing else. They like to climb trees to both eat the leaves and die in a safe place.
Comparative Structure & Function
Grasshoppers are an internally segmented, sexually and asexually reproductive anthropods. They excrete through malphigian tubes, breathe through spiracles, have an open circulation, have a present nervous system, and have a complete digestive system. They also have extensive cephalization and have three germ layers.
